How it is made
Each piece starts as a hide of vegetable-tanned buffalo leather, about 1.4 mm thick. The artisan traces the pattern onto dampened leather, cuts every outline freehand with a swivel knife, then shapes the design with hand tools and a wooden mallet: bevelers raise the flowers, backgrounders press the ground down, pear shaders add contour, seeders mark the flower centres and veiners draw the leaves, so the flowers and scrolls stand up in relief. Colour is brushed on by hand, one shade at a time, an antique patina is rubbed into the cuts and wiped off the raised surface to give the carving depth, and the edges are hand-laced with leather thongs. One artisan takes a piece from the first cut to the last stitch, in a small women-run workshop in South India, so no two pieces are exactly alike. The carving follows Western floral and scroll patterns: deep, sculpted and full of movement. That sets it apart from Shantiniketan leatherwork of Bengal, which is made on thinner E.I. (East India) tanned goat or sheep leather and decorated with regional folk motifs. Thick buffalo leather like this softens with use and darkens into a rich patina, so the bag looks better in ten years than on the day you buy it. It is a piece of hand art made to be kept and handed on.
Care: Store in a dry place, keep it dry, and wipe occasionally with a soft, dry cotton cloth.
